SA: Lucasraps inks Def Jam Africa deal, drops new single

South African hip hop artist Lucasraps has signed with Def Jam Recordings Africa. The announcement was made at a virtual event and Lucasraps becomes the company’s first signee in 2021.

He joins local artists Boity, Cassper NyovestNadia NakaiNasty C, Tshego, Tellaman, Ricky Tyler, Larry Gaaga and Vector, who are all signed to the Universal Music Group imprint.

The deal coincides with the release of his single ‘Slide’, which is now available for streaming and download(link is external). ‘Slide’ was co-produced by Christer and seeks to take listeners on a musical journey of explosive bars that are strategically laid on the song.

“I’m happy and trusted the process,” Lucasraps said. “God makes no mistakes and as an artist I have become a firm believer in his ways. I’ve been working this project since 2018 – discarding what I didn’t like, improving on what I did and accommodating the dynamic growth that contributed to the development of my sound.”

He added: “This is only the beginning, the wait was an honest test of faith. To myself and to all my supporters, I appreciate your patience. Trust me, it’s worth the wait.”

Def Jam Africa A&R head Innocent Nkosi said: “Def Jam Recordings Africa as a young label is honoured to be working with such a talent. Lucasraps is one talented rapper who is versatile and we looking at opening international doors for him.”

Lucasraps, born Lucas Duncan Malong in Cape Town, burst onto the music scene in 2016 with his debut single ‘Ammo’ featuring DJ Maphorisa. He has made appearances on a number of projects that solidified his name as an act to look out for. He has worked with Dr Peppa, Riky Rick, Chang Cello and Blxckie.
